Richard Holtzman has been named the new Principal and Vice President of Hospitality at The Athens Group
Leading figure in the hospitality sector Richard Holtzman has joined The Athens Group (Athens Group), a full-service real estate development firm that specializes in building branded and non-branded luxury homes, home sites, communities, golf courses, spas, and other related recreational facilities. Holtzman will be a principal and vice president of hospitality, bringing more than 40 years of experience and leadership to the position. As part of his responsibilities, Holtzman will oversee the company’s core operations and asset management disciplines. He will also help to grow and manage the portfolio of projects that Athens Group has undertaken, as well as its relationships and strategic partners, which include capital partners and hotel operators.
Richard Holtzman was a vice president at Montage International for more than ten years before joining the Athens Group. In Hawaii, he inaugurated the Montage Kapalua Bay, which is situated where the renowned Kapalua Bay Hotel once stood. After the opening, Holtzman started working for Montage International in a corporate capacity that supported the expansion of the Montage International brands by developing senior leadership.
Holtzman has four decades of varied work experience. He was the first general manager of The Boulders Resort and Club in Arizona and has held executive positions at The Plaza Hotel and Arizona Biltmore. Later, Holtzman became the first President of Carefree Resorts, which was founded on the Boulders. In 1995, Holtzman received the title of “Hotelier of the World” from HOTELS magazine readers, who recognized the influence of Carefree Resorts on the resort industry. He is still the youngest person to have received this esteemed honor to date. After the sale of Carefree Resorts, Holtzman worked with Wyndham International as division President, worked for Scottsdale based DMB Associates as President of Kukui’ula Development Company and led the Resort Division for Pyramid Global Hospitality.
Holtzman received his Cornell University B.S. in Hotel Administration.
He resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his spouse Sheila. Their three grown-up children are Kevin, Whitney, and Jennifer. As a member of The American Hotel & Lodging Association’s Resort Committee’s Executive Committee and a former chairman, Holtzman is still involved in national industry affairs.
