MCD Crackdown on Coaching Centers: Reactions and Protests After the Tragic Event
Following the Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCD)’s recent action against coaching centres for violating building bylaws, students have been instructed to vacate basement libraries. The MCD sealed the basements of 13 coaching centres in Karol Bagh on Sunday, which include well-known institutions such as IAS Gurukul, Chahal Academy, and Plutus Academy, due to these violations.
Incident Overview
The crackdown comes after a tragic incident where three students lost their lives due to basement flooding at a coaching centre for IAS aspirants in Old Rajinder Nagar. The tragedy occurred when heavy rains inundated the basement, leading to the students being trapped when the biometric access system failed.
Student Protests
In response, students have been protesting, demanding action and compensation. Sahil, a student protestor, expressed frustration at the lack of response from MCD officials and the delay in addressing their demands. The students have requested information about casualties, compensation for the deceased and injured, and other related actions.
Official Responses
- DCP Central M Harshavardhan: Confirmed the arrest of five additional suspects, bringing the total to seven. He assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the incident.
- BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal: Criticized the MCD and AAP government, stating that merely sealing coaching centres is not a long-term solution. He called for accountability and severe punishment for officials responsible for such incidents.
- AAP MP Sanjay Singh: Described the incident as “very unfortunate” and pointed out the illegal operation of basement libraries. He criticized the BJP for allegedly hindering effective action and shifting responsibility to the Delhi LG.
Protests and Demands
Student protests in Karol Bagh continued into Monday, with demonstrators calling for:
- Action against coaching centres and basement libraries.
- Introduction of a rent regulation bill to address high rents and brokerage.
- Implementation of insurance coverage or grievance redressal mechanisms for students.
- Measures to prevent waterlogging and electrocution during rainy conditions.
Legal Actions
In response to the incident, Delhi Police have arrested the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre, charging them with culpable homicide and other offences.
