Excellent camera and foldable screen in the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro review

While some may argue Vivo is a little late to the party, it is entering the market at the right time with the launch of its first foldable smartphone in India. According to Counterpoint Research, there will be a 35 percent increase in foldable shipments by 2025, signaling the near mainstreaming of the foldable market. The adoption rate of foldables is expected to increase as companies continue to lower their price.

It goes beyond price alone. The Fold 3 Pro is a great example of how foldable phones are now more useful than before. Rapid technological advancements are producing lighter, slimmer phones with all the features of a conventional flagship phone. This is the reason I adore foldable phones: they offer a unique experience that makes it possible to unfold the device to reveal a larger screen, which is perfect for watching content and multitasking. With the X Fold 3 Pro, Vivo’s most recent product, this experience is much improved. In our review, let us go over it in more detail.

most elegant foldable phone design to date

I have good reason to believe that the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is the most sophisticated foldable phone available. It is the lightest and thinnest foldable phone available, which makes it comfortable to use. Although foldable smartphones are typically bulkier than regular smartphones, the lightweight design and thin profile of the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro make it easy to forget you are using a flexible device. Its narrow and elongated form factor fits comfortably in the hand, reducing the likelihood of dropping it, in contrast to the typical phablet-style display. But when placed on surfaces like a sofa or bed, the glass back panel tends to slide down easily and is a little slick.

I was impressed by the device’s durability even though I dropped it from my bed multiple times. There were no scratches on the screen, and there were no dents in the body. When folded, the device unfolds completely flat, leaving no space between the screens. Because of the hinge’s strength, one side can remain in place at various angles, enabling the mini-laptop mode. You can watch videos on a single screen without a stand thanks to this useful feature, which you must enable in the settings.

I have been using foldable phones for a long time, and even after months of use, I can vouch for their durability. Even after unintentional drops, hinges do not break easily, but foldables do gradually lose some of their shape. We still do not know this much about the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro.

The device feels more upscale thanks to its glass body and metal frames. It is pleasing to note that the rear camera module is less noticeable than what we have been seeing in the flagship lineup. Because the X Fold 3 Pro phone has an IPX8 rating, you can use it in the rain or with wet hands. Its smooth, non-shiny glass panel readily collects fingerprints when touched by greasy hands, but it is also a bit of a fingerprint magnet.

Vivo’s device now has an alert slider for the first time. OnePlus and iPhones may have influenced this feature, but it is a useful addition for rapidly changing the volume on the phone. The button could have been placed a little bit lower to make it easier to reach, in my opinion.

strong performance

The most recent Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC from Qualcomm powers the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro. This chipset, which powers multiple 2024 flagship phones, is tried and true. In the two weeks I used it, the device performed admirably, managing the majority of tasks with ease. Using it in general, I rarely had any problems with multitasking or the app launcher.

This device is especially enjoyable for gaming. When playing demanding games like Wuthering Waves and Genshin Impact, the graphics setting was set to medium by default rather than high mode. I played at 30 frames per second, and there was no lag or frame drops. But when I forced higher frame rates (like 45 or 60 frames per second), the game told me that my phone was overclocking because of the higher frame rates.

Initially, the gaming performance was fluid at higher frame rates. However, as might be expected, the performance falters. With a stability score of 67%, CPU throttle results demonstrate that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in the X Fold 3 performs best in brief bursts. Put differently, 30 frames per second of gaming performance is good. The phone operates smoothly and with excellent responsiveness in general. With 2,063,312 points, the device actually managed to score slightly higher on the Antutu benchmarking platform than some flagship Android phones. But after five to ten minutes of continuous gaming at a high frame rate, the performance begins to deteriorate.

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro touch has excellent haptic feedback, which gives games and everyday use a tactile element. Like most high-end phones these days, the device does get a little warm when charging or playing games for extended periods of time. This is especially true in places like Delhi, where the sun is currently shining.

I adore the device’s audio output. The stereo speakers on the Vivo X Fold primarily provide depth and crisp treble. It is also pretty loud. My gaming and binge-watching experiences improved as a result.

Excellent display with invisible creases

Given that this is a flagship smartphone, it is not surprising that Vivo has included excellent screens. When folded, it has a 6.53-inch 2K screen, and when unfolded, it has an 8.03-inch 2K display. Rich and brilliant colors are presented in both panels. In order to provide longer battery life and more seamless operation, the LTPO panel supports an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. To check the refresh rate in real time, I toggled the developer mode. I have found that even with low-demanding apps like Calculator, Calendar, and Nothing X, the refresh rate seldom deviates from 24Hz. When the phone was at rest, it would occasionally oscillate between 10Hz and 24Hz, but it hardly ever reached 1Hz. The majority of the time, it functions well, but more optimization can be done.

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro’s nearly flawless unfolded screen, which leaves little to no evidence of creases, enhances the visual appeal of the content. The display is suitable for outdoor use because it has a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, which is the highest among flagship phones. Even in direct sunlight, the display is readable and clear.

Beneath the display of the phone is an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that is incredibly quick and can detect fingerprints from wet hands. This one eliminates the possibility of unintentionally unlocking the screen, which makes it superior to the side sensor in my opinion.

Are UI and apps properly optimized for a 4:3 aspect ratio?

The phone displays content in a 4:3 aspect ratio when it is unfolded. Even though a lot of users stream content with a 16:9 aspect ratio, the Vivo Fold’s larger screen compared to other conventional phones gave users an almost tablet-like experience.

Multitasking is easy with the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro’s user interface, which is well-suited for the foldable format. To enter multitasking mode, just long-press an app and drag it upward. I found it highly convenient to use Twitter and WhatsApp simultaneously, allowing me to discuss the elections on the messaging app while keeping up with real-time updates on Twitter. You can use the dual-screen mode to order products from online shopping apps and continue to chat on WhatsApp. Any app can be used in multi-screen mode. Additionally, the device has a Flex mode that provides a viewing experience similar to that of a computer. It shows a cool control panel when you watch YouTube videos when enabled. This panel lets you manage notifications, volume, screen brightness, and quick screenshots all from one location. It also has a tent mode that is useful for watching videos on the external screen.

The majority of popular apps, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Hotstar, LinkedIn, and others, are suitable for foldable phones. This is true for the most popular social media, entertainment, and productivity apps. Some well-known games, like Candy Crush, Carrom, and 8 Ball Pool, which did not seem to have been updated in months, had trouble adjusting to the foldable screen format, but the newest titles, like BGMI and Genshin Impact, functioned flawlessly. These ran with stretched interfaces or black bars because they did not utilize all of the available space. App developers are expected to prioritize optimization for a satisfying experience as foldables become more and more popular.

Review: Is the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro worth buying?

Buying the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is worthwhile because it is a complete package. The device is a little pricey at Rs 1,59,999, but it is a good option for those looking for a foldable flagship phone with all the features of a regular phone. Fast performance is provided by the gadget, which also excels in the camera department. The battery has a good lifespan, and using the retail box’s 100W fast charger is simple. A top-notch display and high-quality speakers are also included. Additionally, it is the lightest and thinnest foldable phone to date. We give the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro the big thumbs up overall.

The performance of cameras

With its Zeiss-tuned lenses and image processing, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro performs admirably in terms of its camera. With the quality of the most recent Vivo X100 flagship series, you can anticipate remarkable performance in this domain. I have always loved taking pictures with Vivo phones, and I had a great time exploring Gurgaon and taking pictures of some stunning scenery with this phone’s camera. In most cases, I was able to obtain images with a well-balanced dynamic range and no shadow clipping. In addition to having natural colors, the daylight photos do not oversaturate. Although the standard photo mode provides ample details, users can opt for the high-resolution mode to obtain an output with even greater detail.

When the subject is directly exposed to sunlight and the camera does not blow out details or wash out colors, the post-processing is excellent. It softens it and produces an image that appears realistic. I enjoyed how the camera creates a dramatic effect in a scene; the Gurgaon CyberHub building shot, which has a very cinematic appearance, is a good example of how the skies, shadows, and highlights are represented.

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro has remarkable zooming abilities. When I was far from a restaurant and wanted to read the large menu boards inside, the 3x optical zoom helped me and provided high-quality photos. The mode produces shots with accurate colors and retains all the details. This is really amazing.

Great portrait shots are something Vivo is known for, and the new model is no exception. With precise edge detection and the ideal amount of background blur, the gadget produced some stunning portrait shots. The way the hair strands, fabric texture, facial tone, and other details are captured is evident in one of the human subjects. The colors are true to life, and the details and sharpness are spot on. One of the few phones available on the market that allows you to select the ideal lens for various photography situations is the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, which has portrait mode with multiple focal lengths. This feature is fantastic because it allows for a greater variety of compositions without sacrificing image quality.

The outcome for the selfies is likewise comparable. The only drawback is that, even when the beauty mode is disabled, they can occasionally appear a bit overdone and synthetic. Intense shallow depth of field effects are also available in the food mode, where the blurred areas stand out excessively or seem out of place. When taking pictures of food, it is preferable to use the standard mode for greater clarity and details.

The Vivo Fold’s low-light photos really catch my attention. Even when you take a picture in regular light mode, the night mode starts on its own. This provides sharp, noise-free images with nearly natural colors, though occasionally the camera’s post-processing alters the building’s color. However, it can retain details, colors, and sharpness when there is enough light around the subject. All in all, you are in for a treat when it comes to photography.

duration of battery

Given that the device has a 5,700mAh battery with 100W fast charging, the battery life is excellent. The company has an advantage over several tech brands that have stopped shipping fast chargers because it is including the fast charger in the box. It is pretty amazing that the phone lasted for 10 or 11 hours during my use. To fully charge a battery from 5% to 100%, the charger needs about 37 minutes.
