Athens State University to Host Flag Day Celebration

Athens, AL On June 14, 2024, Athens State University will hold a boisterous Flag Day celebration that will unite the neighborhood for a day of patriotic activities. The university’s historic campus will host the event, which honors the adoption of the American flag. There will be a variety of engaging and entertaining activities for guests of all ages.

The official flag-raising ceremony, led by the university’s ROTC unit, will commence the festivities at 10:00 AM. The Athens State University Choir will play the national anthem during the ceremony. Prominent figures from the community, such as Mayor Ronnie Marks and University President Dr. Philip Way, will give speeches emphasizing the value of maintaining national unity and the significance of Flag Day.

Visitors can take part in a range of family-friendly activities all day long, such as:

  • Historical Exhibits: A display of American flags through the ages, curated by the university’s history department, showcasing the evolution of the Stars and Stripes.
  • Patriotic Crafts: Art stations for children to create their own miniature flags and other patriotic crafts.
  • Live Music: performances by local bands and the Athens State University Band, playing a mix of patriotic tunes and contemporary favorites.
  • Food Trucks: A selection of food trucks offering a variety of American cuisine, from classic hot dogs and burgers to regional specialties.

The Veterans and Military Families Center at the university will also have an open house where guests can learn about the resources and assistance offered to veterans and their families. Additionally, the center will have a Wall of Honor where locals can post memorials to loved ones who have served in the military.

“We are ecstatic to unite our community in honor of Flag Day,” Dr. Philip Way stated. “This event honors the symbol of our country and gives us a chance to come together, think about our shared values, and celebrate the freedoms we cherish.”

Athens State University is hosting a free public Flag Day celebration. To enjoy the outdoor festivities, attendees are kindly requested to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Activities will be shifted inside to the university’s event center in the event of bad weather.
