Amit Shah Examines Security in J&K and Amarnath Yatra Preparations Following Four Terrorist Attacks
At a high-level meeting this morning, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior members of the Indian security establishment reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where four terror attacks in a week have raised concerns.
Less than two weeks before the Amarnath Yatra, which is expected to draw thousands of pilgrims, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla are also present at the meeting.
CRPF Director General Anish Dayal Singh, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande, Chief of Army Staff (designate) Lt General Upendra Dwivedi, and Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka were among the high-ranking security officials present at the meeting.
Following four terror attacks in the last week, the Union Territory is on high alert. On June 9, terrorists targeted a bus in Reasi, resulting in nine pilgrim deaths and forty-one injuries. In the other attacks, a CRPF officer was killed and several others were injured.
The two attacks in a row in Jammu and Kashmir have become a major problem for the third government of Narendra Modi, who has frequently emphasized the relative peace in the region following the revocation of its special status in 2019.
Prime Minister Modi chaired a meeting with top officials to discuss the situation in the Union Territory shortly after taking office for a third time.
Concerns about security surrounding the Amarnath Yatra, which starts on June 29 and runs through August 19, have also been brought up by the attacks. Baltal and Pahalgam are the two routes that pilgrims take in Jammu and Kashmir to reach the cave shrine. The shrine had over 4 lakh visitors the year before. According to Jammu and Kashmir police, concerted efforts to guarantee pilgrims’ safety are the main priority.
